Roots of Montessori


About This Course

This special course has been created to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Montessori’s birth. Barbara Isaacs, together with Jana Morgan Herman and Sid Mohandas, consider some unique and important aspects of Montessori education. Learn about the Montessori legacy and the foundations of what we see today to be Montessori’s Cosmic vision.

Please note this course is staffed and running from Late Summer 2020 for three weeks. However you can access the course any time after this and complete in your own time. You will have a minimum of one month access to this course, depending on when you start.

What You'll Learn

This course will cover: Maria Montessori the Activist - early support for women; Montessori’s time in India 1939–1946; Science of Peace; Reflection on peace education.


There are no requirements to take this course, just an interest in education, peace and Montessori.

Barbara Isaacs

Barbara joined the newly established MCI in 1998 after training Montessori teachers both at Montessori St Nicholas and London Montessori Centre. She was also a proprietor of Seedlings Montessori Nursery in Oxfordshire for fifteen years. Until July 2018 she served as the Chief Education Officer for Montessori Centre International and the Senior Accreditation Officer for the Montessori Accreditation and Evaluation Board. Barbara is now the Global Ambassador for Montessori St Nicholas.

Sid Mohandas

Sid Mohandas is an early childhood Montessori educator and teacher trainer, who is currently doing his doctorate at Middlesex University investigating gender in Montessori spaces using feminist 'new' materialist theories. Sid is the founder of The Male Montessorian and Montistory platforms. He is also a guest lecturer for the Master's program module Interrogating Policy and Practice for Social Justice at Middlesex University.

Jana Morgan Herman

Jana has loved Montessori for almost 30 years as a parent, teacher, and teacher trainer. Her children attended Montessori from 18 months through high school. She is the director of VMAT, a MACTE teacher training program in Hanoi, and is also a national and international presenter and keynote speaker, parent educator, coach, and consultant. She holds a BA in Literature and a Master’s in Montessori Education and is a certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator. Jana is the co-author of the Montessori Parent Coronavirus Survival Guide and the founder and co-admin of the 3-6 Montessori at Home During School Closure Parent Support Facebook group.
